Aquarium Owner’s Manual

first tropical tank and used this book, along with resources on the internet and from our local fish store. I thought this provided a good overview that isn’t too technical or long. I read it in an afternoon. Some things I thought were interesting;
-A history of fish-keeping as a hobby.
-Good photos and descriptions of the fish
-Several different tank setups with photos and fish selection.
-Keeping the fish healthy with photos of what common problems look like. I’ve heard of ich, but now I know what it looks like.

Plus, it also covers marine (saltwater) tanks which we may want to do if we stay with the hobby.

Overall an excellent book to start with.(Customer Review).

The thing I like most about “FrontPage 2003 : The Missing Manual” by Jessica Mantaro is how well this book is laid out. There are many times when a book is not intelligently planned out ahead of time and you are dealt with the obstacle of having to search chapter through chapter to find what you are looking for. Upon opening this book you will immediately find this to not be the case. Separated into 18 chapters with a helpful index at the end, this book covers all the important topics:

FrontPage used to be a basic, clunky app that wasn’t the best tool around, but of all the 2003 Microsoft Office updates, this application is probably the one most worthy of an upgrade. The new version of FP truly shines over the rest and it will be a helpful companion by your side while you are working on your corporate or personal web site.

Four factors: First, the information about grammar and usage is absolutely mainstream, quite consistent with the majority of other important references (The Chicago Manual of Style, for one). Second, it is accurate and reliable. Third, the outstanding index makes the book wonderfully easy to use; you can look something up, in everyday terms, and readily find a rerence. Fourth, the rules are short and the examples clear; once you’ve found the rule you need, you can read it, grasp it, and 30 seconds later be on your way.

As a full-time trainer of writers and editors, I have used Gregg with every population from grammar-challenged support staff to experienced editors and highly educated professionals. Building a PC for Dummies removes the intimidation factor from building your own Intel-based personal computer, explains what you need, and shows you how to put everything together. It's a fine place to start if you've never assembled your own machine before and want to give the process a try.

Author Mark L. Chambers describes what to look for when shopping for components, but he refrains from recommending any specific models or manufacturers. Building a PC for Dummies would be stronger if he had made such recommendations, the way Tom's Hardware Guide does. Even without a specific shopping list, this book makes it possible for a novice computer builder to make informed decisions about motherboards, processors, storage devices, expansion cards, and input devices.

Chambers presents the assembly process logically, explaining how to install a component or two at a time while performing incremental testing. He includes troubleshooting information in each component's section, but it's odd that he puts his discussion of operating systems in an appendix--most system builders will want to see their creations run as soon as possible. --David Wall

Creating Minds: An Anatomy Of Creativity As Seen Through The Lives Of Freud, Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky, Eliot, Graham, And Gandhi

This is one of the most enjoyable as well as one of the most informative books I have read in recent years. I have long admired Gardner’s work, especially his research on multiple intelligences which he discusses in other works such as Intelligence Reframed (2000), Frames of Mind (1993), and Multiple Intelligences (also 1993). As Gardner explains in the Preface, this volume” represents both a culmination and a beginning: a culmination in that it brings together my lifelong interests in the phenomena of creativity and the particulars of history; a beginning in that introduces a new approach to the study of human creative endeavors, one that draws on social-scientific as well as humanistic traditions.” Specifically, this “new approach” begins with the individual but then focuses both on the particular “domain,” or symbol system, in which an individual functions and on the group of individuals, or members of what Gardner calls the “field,” who judge the quality of the new work in the domain.

This is the approach he takes when analyzing the lives and achievements of Freud, Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky, Eliot, Graham, and Gandhi. Throughout the book, Gardner makes brilliant use of both exposition (e.g. analysis, comparison and contrast) and narration (especially when examining causal relationships of special significance) to reveal, explain, and evaluate each of the seven geniuses.

Gardner sets for himself several specific objectives:

* “First, I seek to enter into the worlds that each of the seven figures occupied during the period under investigation — roughly speaking, the half century from 1885 to 1935.”

* “In so doing, I hope to illuminate the nature of their own particular, often peculiar, intellectual capacities, personality configurations, social arrangements, and creative agendas, struggles and accomplishments.”

* Also, “I seek conclusions about the nature of the Creative Enterprise writ large. I believe that if we can better understand the breakthroughs achieved by the individuals deliberately drawn from diverse domains, we should be able to tease out the principles that govern creative human activity, wherever it arises.”

* Finally, “I seek conclusions about the sparkling, if often troubled, handful of decades that I term `the modern era’…Such a selection [of the seven during the half-century period] allows me to comment not only on [their] particular achievemnents…but also on the times that formed them, and that they in turn helped to define.”

Gardner achieves all of these objectives while somehow maintaining a delicate balance between respecting (indeed celebrating) individual genius and explaining the relevance (to each of the seven) of three relationships which are common to them all: the relationship between what he calls the “child” and the “master” throughout human development; the relationship between an individual and the work in which he or she is engaged; and finally, the relationship between the individual and other persons in his or her world.

Of special interest to me is Gardner’s acknowledgment that two themes emerged during the course of his research for this book which he had not anticipated when he began. Citing a “confidant” relationship with Fleiss from whom Freud received “sustenance” when he needed it most, Gardner gradually realized that a relationship of this kind, “far from being an isolated case,” represents the “norm” among the other six. Besso played much the same role for Einstein, Braque for Picasso, the Diaghilev circle for Stravinsky, Pound for Eliot, Horst for Graham, and Anasyra Sarabhai for Gandhi.

Gardner cites what he calls “the Faustian bargain” as the second theme which emerged unexpectedly during his research. This subject is much too complicated to be summarized in a review such as this. Suffice to note now that inorder to maintain their gifts and continue their work, the seven creators “went through behaviors or practices of a fundamentally superstitious, irrational, or compulsive nature,” thereby sacrificing normal relationships with family members and friends. “The kind of bargain may vary, but the tenacity with which it is maintained seems consistent.” I intend to keep these two themes in mind when I re-read this extraordinary book. The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers: Gentle Ways to Stop Bedtime Battles and Improve Your Childs Sleep (Pantley)

I read “The no-cry sleep solution”, and loved it, but I was needed something for my now toddler who is presenting a million new problems. The most wonderful thing about this book is that it asks you questions in a non-judgemental way that then allow you to assess your situation, and decide if you really need to make a change, then it gives you a variety of solutions. The author points out that there is no one size fits all solution, and then she goes on to give you many gentle and loving options. If the cry it out method worked for you, you wouldn’t be reading this review, now would you??? I’m not aware of any sleep books that deal specifically with older children, other than this . All the ones I know of deal with 6 month old babies, and I found most to be unacceptable for a toddler dealing with separation anxiety. This book however, talks about many individual sleep problems including separation anxiety, how to move to their own bed, nightmares, waking too early, daylight savings time, teething, non-nappers, trips to the parent’s bed… The list goes on and on. One more wonderful thing about this book is that the author did more of a scientific study on the matter. She interviewed over a 1000 families, and then had over 200 “test mommies” to work out her sleep theories. She also refers to the Sleep in America polls, and refers to the current leading sleep expert at Stanford (not Ferber). Instead of just giving her opinions on what worked for her own children (she has 4), she actually asks other families and does research. Despite my own personal objections to Ferberizing, she makes no judgements like that, everything she says is loving and encouraging.
Just for the record, you’re not alone. Here’s an excerpt from the book taken out of the Sleep in America Poll:
Toddlers wake up:

in other words, 47% of toddlers wake up at least once per night and need a parent to fall back asleep. This is including all sleep techniques.
Preschoolers:
3 or more times a night (2%)

in other words, 36% of preschoolers wake up at least once per night and need a parent to fall back asleep.
She then goes on to say that “it is perfectly natural, absolutely normal, and totally expected for your toddler or preschooler to wake up in the night and need your help to fall back asleep. Sleeping all through the night, every night, without needing a parent’s assistance is like learning to walk or talk or drink from a cup - all kids get there, but they do so at their own speed, a little at a time, and in their own unique way. I promise I won’t leave you dangling there, just because something is normal doesn’t mean you have to simply live with it until things change on their own.”

I won’t lie, if you want immediate results in a matter of days, this is not the book for you. However, if you’d like to teach your child to sleep in a loving, gentle, compassionate (and thus slow) way, this book will help you get there. I’ve been practicing the ideas in this book for a few days, and already I’m seeing some improvements. It has many creative ways to communicate with your child your wishes for sleep. Like - make a book with pictures of your bedtime routine, and a picture of your child sleeping in his own crib, then cuddled by his parents in the morning… (Customer Review).
